La familia Ramón y Cajal se traslada a Zaragoza en 1872, Santiago estudia medicina, siendo su padre profesor interino de Disección en la Facultad de Medicina, por lo que no puede evitar problemas con algunos compañeros y profesores. El joven Ramón y Cajal vive de lleno el ambiente estudiantil de la época, clases en la Facultad, relación con otros estudiantes y profesores, prácticas de laboratorio de disección anatómica en colaboración con su padre, exámenes y premios. Ramón y Cajal comienza a despuntar en algunas asignaturas por su perfecto dominio de la materia, lo cual no deja de asombrar a profesores y alumnos. Algaradas estudiantiles, discusiones académicas y peleas por mujeres conforman la vida juvenil de estos años, hasta acabar la carrera. Afición a la fotografía, lecturas filosóficas, dibujos anatómicos y clases de gimnasia o reuniones de cafés, sus primeras novias.
